When I spotted this dress, I knew it’d be the perfect little black dress for day to night.  I’ve spoken so much about versatile fashion and this is a perfect example.  All it takes is a few tweaks, some different shoes and a change of bag to give it a completely different vibe.

If an item can be dressed down for the day and also up for the night, it’s a great investment.   Regardless of the price, you should always be thinking about how many times you can restyle something to maximise wear out of it.

Recently, I’ve found this can be forgotten when shopping for high street fashion.  We hear so much about the likes of Chanel or Gucci being an “investment” or “heirloom” brand and they are totally right.  However, just because something is affordable doesn’t mean it’s disposable.

One of the things I’m always keen to stress on this blog is not to splurge on something fleeting which you’ll only like for a hot minute and will be thrown into the back of the wardrobe, never to see the light of day again.  Trust me, I’ve done it so many times and wasted so much money.  Learn from my mistakes!

Although this Topshop dress was super reasonable at £39, I didn’t buy it thinking I can wear it once to a party.  I bought it because not only is it perfect for December aka party month, but it’s also a great day dress.

During the day, I love this dress with a polo neck paired underneath it.  I know my clogs are very Marmite, you’ll either love them or hate them.  Personally, I’m obsessed with them worn this dress.  They make a perfect statement but also give a more casual feel to the overall look.  For an extra daytime feel I added my favourite vintage backpack.

The evening look is much simpler.  I’ve just added some heels, a more glamourous bag and choker.

With this more night time appropriate look I wanted to let the dress shine as much as possible.  These 80s style statement shoulders are so fabulous and I wanted them to be the main feature in this look.  Whereas with the day look I tried to tone the impact of the shoulders and sleeves down.

This is just 2 examples from an endless list of ways to wear this dress.  I hope this post has been a good reminder that even high street fashion can be a great investment too.  It doesn’t just have to be for one occasion.  Whenever you’re thinking about buying something, reardless of the price, always consider how you can maximise wear out of it.

I’m totally team ‘classic investment pieces’ rather than busy for the sake of it. But saying that, I do think it’s ok to save on trendy pieces you may not get so much mileage out of. For example this year I’ve developed an obsession with tasselled earrings (so you can imagine I’m ALL OVER that choker necklace of yours!) but I doubt I’ll still be as crazy about them say 3 years down the line, so ebay it was!

This dress however, is the perfect example of a versatile, well made piece that’ll be in your wardrobe for years. Love how you styled it 2 ways (layering is one of my favourite styling tricks!).

Such a beautiful and versatile dress and inexpensive too. It’s good that it’s long sleeve so there’s no need to bring a coat on a chilly night. This bow bag is definitely a cutie!

It’s a total bargain hun! You’ll totally get value for money out of it! xx
